shanghai - suzhou river

Suzhou Creek is a small river that flows into the Huangpu right in the center of Shanghai. Its recent history is one of a heavily polluted river, but in the last years the area is cleaned and renovated entirely. The banks of the Suzhou Creek (River) are used for various fitness exercises. In between Suzhou Creek and Nanjing Roads there are many old quarters, called lilong or longtang. You can view photos of two lilongs in this area in my Suzhou Creek special.

Here are the photos from the communities a little more to the west, not far from the central train station, such as Brilliant City (aka Two Bay City) and Caoyang new Village. Brilliant City is a recent project of thousands of apartments with many still being under construction. This kind of housing is not my cup of tea, but you may judge for yourself. Caoyang was a new village during the days of Chiarman Mao, in the fifties. It still breaths some communist air in a metropolis that hasn't left many things from the past decades.
